2010 Outings

By Gene Mahn, SPFF Outings Chair

Here are the scheduled SPFF outings for 2010.  More will be added soon.

The first outing of the year will be over Superbowl Weekend, February 5, 6 and 7.  This has come to be known as the Annual Lower Owens Outing.  Weather permitting, we’ll be fishing nymphs and possibly dry flies. This trip is less formal than most of our outings.  No planned instruction, only one scheduled event and no fee.  Just go to Bishop and have fun fishing!  We’ll have our usual group dinner on Saturday, February 6th at BBQ Bill’s.  Everyone’s invited, of course!  We’ll plan to meet there at 6 p.m.

Wayne Stinson and Tom Wright will again be leading the Thursday Thrillers the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from March through November.  Each scheduled day, they will choose a location somewhere in Southern California to take as many of our member who wish to go.  This will be their fifth year doing this wonderful commitment to introduce our members to the really terrific fishing available in our own ‘backyard’!

The Fly Casting School Graduation Outing is open to all SPFF members and especially the new graduates of the casting school.  It will be in Bishop April 30, May 1 and 2.  Graduates of the Casting School, held April 3, 10 and 17 will, of course, be anxious to demonstrate their new skill.  All SPFF members are encouraged to attend this outing and to be especially attentive to the needs of these new fly anglers.  Again, we’ll do Saturday night May 1 at BBQ Bill’s.  For more information, contact Steve Ebersold.

The annual SPFF Fly Fishing School at Hot Creek Ranch will be from June 3 thru 6.  In addition to this terrific school, head instructor Dennis Tsuyuki will hold three pre-clinics on April 24, May 8 and May 15.  Your fee covers the pre-clinics, fishing on the ranch, expert instruction and guides. I recommend you contact Dennis Tsuyuki and get your reservation in pronto because this event fills up quickly.

The Getting Started Outing (GSO) will be held in the Mammoth Lakes area July 22 to 25.  There will be a pre-clinic on July 10.  Unless otherwise noted, all pre clinics are held at Reseda Park at the picnic area just east of the tennis courts on Victory Blvd.

We are privileged to have been granted access to both lakes at Fort Tejon.  We are one of a very few groups to have this opportunity to fish one of the best still water fisheries in the Western U.S.  Because of the great success of the Lake Tejon trips on 2009, Phil Peck will guide 4 trips in 2010 to the lakes at Fort Tejon.  They will be April 17, May 18, September 11 and October 9.  The April and October outings will be at the large lake and the May and September trips to the small lake at Tejon.

Michael Schweit will again guide his annual outing to Tejon’s small lake on August 21.

October 14 - 17;  Jim Lechner will host his 5th annual Katching on the Kern Klassic. This annual, autumn angling adventure to the Kern River grows in popularity each year.

The new dates for our annual Nymphing Clinic in 2010 will be November 5 through 7 in the Bishop/Mammoth Lakes area.  Almost the entire area is open but all year now but much will depend on the weather.  There will also be a pre-clinic on October 23 at Reseda Park.  For information you may contact me at 805 497-9905.

That’s it so far for 2010.  There will be other outings as we enter the New Year and we’ll make every effort to bring you information so you can make plans.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please note:  Most of the outings are fee-free.  However when we are charged to use private facilities, we will pass along the costs to those who want to take advantage of the opportunity.  It’s still very much less than you would pay for a guided trip anywhere and probably the best bargain around!
